January is almost here and with it comes a wave of new divorces. Many people think of the New Year as a time to reflect on their past and to move forward with the goals they have for the next year. For some, that goal is going to be to move on independently without a spouse.

Did you know that almost 90% of people marry before they turn 50? This is because healthy marriages are actually good for people's psychological health. However, unhappy marriages are just the opposite, so there's no question that some people simply shouldn't be together.

Around 40 to 50% of all couples who marry do eventually divorce. It might be a year or 20 years, but the statistics show that there is a relatively good chance that you or someone you know will divorce in your lifetime. Subsequent marriages are even more likely to end in divorce.

How can you make your divorce easy and move on faster this year?

If your goal for 2020 is to move on quickly, remember that you'll need to be flexible. Divorce is a legal process, and that means that you will need to negotiate and to take time to reflect on what you want (or don't want) from your marriage. If you don't have kids, divorce might be a little easier, but if you do, you'll need to sit down and think about how you'd like to divide your time with them. If you and your spouse can agree on child custody and property division, you'll be on the way to an amicable divorce.
