What should you expect when buying a home?

| Mar 11, 2019 | Real Estate

Buying your first family home is an exciting step, but it can also be frightening. What if you buy the wrong home? How do you know that this is a good deal? What happens if you change your mind?

These are all great questions, and they’re part of the reason why it’s a good idea to work with your attorney before agreeing to any contracts.

When you look into buying a home, you’ll be presented with many options. Once you find a home you like, you’ll need to have it inspected. Your attorney can help you with the initial contract where you make an offer. You should review the contract carefully to make sure the terms are agreeable. For example, you’ll want to make sure there are contingencies in the contract so that you can back out of the purchase with no conflict if something is wrong with the home that you weren’t expecting.

When you reach the point where you want to buy the home and are satisfied with the inspection and any repairs that had to be made, you’ll have the home appraised for its final value. The mortgage lender, if you have one, will check the title of the home to make sure the seller is the true owner of the property. Finally, you will sign documents at closing to complete the purchase. This includes loan documents, which your attorney should also review with you to make sure you’re getting the best terms.

Once these steps are complete, you’ll be ready to move into your new home, confident that your contract and purchase is sound.
